Recent GameStop Stock Surge

Recently, GameStop’s stocks increased by 800%, going from around $4 up to $350. This is because of many people from Reddit buying the stock at the same time, forcing the people at Wall Street who short sell stocks similarly to GameStop’s to have to buy many stocks to close out their position. This is known as a short squeeze. Normally, on Wall Street, there are strict rules against large groups of people getting together to buy certain stock. However, since this did not take place at Wall Street but rather Reddit, this type of activity is legal. Other companies that have started to be impacted by these short squeezes include AMC, Blackberry, Nokia, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Blockbuster. However, despite this large fluctuation, the Average American will not be greatly influenced.
