Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a term used to describe an advanced problem-solving process computers can use to perform tasks with human-like logic processes. Although this is a relatively new technology, the potential this technology brings is very high. Recently, AI usage in medical fields has been greatly increasing in the development of preventative medication and new drug discovery.
IBM’s Watson for Genomics is an example of a product which effectively uses AI in creating preventative treatments: it compares the inputted data to a large knowledge base to provide information about the predicted disease based on symptoms and then provides various therapeutic options based off of its prediction. Thanks to this technology, over 1,000 patients at the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center were given treatments based on their symptoms.
Google Cloud is also utilizing AI in its healthcare applications – Google Cloud examines users’ health records and provides insight back to the user to provide him or her with important information to make good clinical decisions.
Artificial Intelligence usage is likely to continue increasing in the industries of medication development and drug discovery due to the rapid speed it delivers healthcare information at a low price. Additionally, the information that AI systems give back will only continue to improve as databases get bigger. With time, we can expect AI usage to expand even further in the healthcare industry with the large amount of benefits it brings.
